Jeoldusan Martyrs' Shrine is also called Jamdubong Peak as it resembles the head of silkworm. This location with beautiful scenery bears the sad story of Korean Catholic history during the late Joseon period.
Jeoldusan, is the site where many Catholics were brutally murdered during the Byeongin Persecution of 1866, which is considered the harshest persecution in the history of Korean Catholics. Thus, the Memorial Hall was established to appease those martyrs' souls. The Memorial Hall, consisting of a Church, Relics of 12 Saints, and a Museum, displays relics of the Korean Catholic church, various documents and remains of martyrs. In addition, a statue of Kim Dae-geon (the first priest in Korea) and other martyrs' monuments are also erected on the holy ground.
